THE CRAZIEST WEDDING MISHAPS: Don’t Get Stuck Like These Couples Did
Planning a wedding is a monumental task. Every detail needs to be perfect, from the flowers to the vows, and of course, the music. But sometimes, despite the best planning, things can go hilariously—or disastrously—wrong. As a seasoned wedding DJ, I’ve seen my share of close calls and last-minute saves. Here’s a roundup of some of the craziest wedding mishaps from my experiences and stories I’ve heard from other wedding DJs and wedding coordinators, along with tips on how to avoid these situations and keep your wedding day smooth and unforgettable for all the right reasons.
1. The Officiant Who Got a Little Too Zen
Picture this: the sun is setting, the guests are all seated, and the bride is about to walk down the aisle when someone notices the officiant… meditating? Turns out, he decided to do some “pre-ceremony relaxation” and fell into a deep trance, forgetting all about the wedding. The groom had to nudge him awake, mid-processional, just to get him to start the ceremony!
How to Avoid It: Make sure your officiant has a set schedule and maybe remind them that meditation can wait until after the “I do’s.” If they’re prone to zoning out, keep a backup officiant or a close friend on standby.
2. The Skydiving Bride… Who Missed the Landing
One adventurous bride decided to skydive into her outdoor wedding ceremony. It was all set to be a grand entrance—until the wind picked up, and she ended up landing in a nearby pond instead of the aisle. The guests were left in shock, and the ceremony was delayed while the bride dried off and tried to salvage her makeup.
How to Avoid It: If you’re planning an extreme entrance, work with professionals who can anticipate potential issues. Always have a backup plan and a change of clothes handy, just in case.
3. The DJ Who Partied Too Hard in Spain
At a destination wedding on the beautiful island of Mallorca, the DJ decided to embrace the local culture—a little too enthusiastically. After a few too many beachside cocktails, he lost track of time and showed up to the ceremony sunburnt and an hour late. The entire event was thrown off schedule, with guests left sweltering in the sun and the bride fuming as the DJ stumbled onto the scene, looking more like he’d just come from a drunken siesta than ready to spin tracks.
How to Avoid It: Hire a well-vetted, professional DJ who treats your wedding with the respect it deserves. Make sure they’re experienced in destination events and understand that this isn’t an opportunity for an all expenses paid vacation—it's your big day!
4. The Drunk Uncle Who Stole the Mic
Toasts are a time for heartfelt words and touching memories—or so they should be. At one wedding, the groom’s uncle got a bit too excited after a few too many drinks. He grabbed the mic and launched into a half hour-long stand-up routine, complete with impressions of family members, questionable jokes, some profanities in front of young ears, and a dance-off challenge to the groom. The uncle had to be escorted away, but not before insisting on an acapella rendition of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
How to Avoid It: Have a designated toastmaster who can politely but firmly keep the speeches on track. And maybe suggest a two-drink limit before the toasts.
5. The Photobombing Frenchman
A couple’s picturesque beach wedding in the South of France was photobombed by an uninvited nude sunbather who refused to move out of the shot. They had no idea the beach they were shooting on was deemed clothing-optional. The couple's wedding album now features a hairy stranger in nature’s finest get-up lounging in the background. One for the mantle, I’m sure.
How to Avoid It: If you’re planning an outdoor wedding in a public space, work with your photographer and planner to find ways to secure privacy for key moments. This could mean choosing less popular times or locations, or arranging for temporary barriers to keep uninvited guests at bay. And always have a local contact who knows the area.
7. The Bridesmaid Who Caught Fire
At an intimate, candlelit ceremony, one bridesmaid’s long flowing dress got too close to the aisle candles and caught fire. Luckily, quick-thinking guests were able to extinguish the flames with no injuries, but the bridesmaid’s dress was ruined, and the ceremony was interrupted.
How to Avoid It: If you’re planning a candlelit ceremony, make sure the candles are safely positioned and that all fabrics are flame-resistant. Consider using LED candles for a safer alternative.
8. The Mexico Beach Photo Shoot Gone Wild
One adventurous couple decided to have a destination wedding in Mexico, complete with a romantic beach photo shoot. Everything was going smoothly until a pack of wild dogs appeared out of nowhere and needed to send the message that this was their block, and outsiders were not welcome. The bride and groom had to sprint down the beach, dodging the snarling dogs, while the photographer captured what can only be described as a bizarre action movie scene.
How to Avoid It: If you’re planning a destination wedding in an unfamiliar location, scout the area beforehand for any potential “wildlife.” Again, having a local contact on hand that knows the area is invaluable. And always be ready for a quick getaway—just in case!
9. The DJ Who Played the Entrance Song… Three Times
The newlyweds were ready for their big entrance at an upscale NYC wedding venue, but instead of the energizing, clean Cardi B track they’d chosen, the DJ accidentally played a particular Cardi B song with a 3-letter acronym in the title and incredibly inappropriate lyrics (you can guess which one). The DJ switched the track, but just a little too late—expletives ensued. The DJ and the couple reset, only to have the DJ accidentally play the same song again. By the third time, the DJ got it right. But the damage had been done. Little Isaiah, the ring bearer, will never be the same.
How to Avoid It: Double-check with your DJ to ensure they have the right songs labeled and tagged correctly (and know their tracks!). Budget DJ’s are often busy trying to book out their calendar with all types of gigs with varying standards, and things get a little mixed up sometimes. Choose a DJ who focuses exclusively on luxury weddings and takes the necessary time to prepare for your event, promising zero margin for error.
10. The Dance Floor Disaster
A groom’s overzealous dance move landed him on the floor—literally. He slipped, and knocked himself out cold, having to attend the rest of his wedding celebration seated, insisting the party continue as he “watched”. What was meant to be a fun moment turned into an embarrassing fall in front of all the guests and missed memories—quite literally perhaps.
How to Avoid It: While you want to have fun, be mindful of the dance floor’s condition and your footwear. Encourage guests to wear appropriate shoes, especially if the dance floor might be slick. And if you have a wild move planned, maybe test it out ahead of time.
